Creating an icon texture from scratch in Photoshop.
Difficulty: easy

Icon Texture 01
What we're making
Get Started
Create a new document. As I want this to be an icon texture the size will be 100 x 100px.

With the new file open set your foreground colour to white and your background color to #333333 (or any other dark grey tone).
Step 1
Go to your layers palette and add a Gradient Fill adjustment layer (alternatively go to Layer > New Fill Adjustment Layer > Gradient)
Step 2
Make sure you pick the Foreground to Background Presets we set up before. This means our gradient will go from white to #333333.
The gradient style for this texture will be "Reflected". If you want the gradient to be a bit "smoother" increase the scale. I dragged it to 120%. Click OK to finally add the layer.
Step 3
Now to make it even more smooth go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. I used a radius of 4 pixels.
Then go to Filters > Blur > Motion Blur to make it look a little less coordinated. I used an angle of 34° and a distance of 100 pixels. Use whatever settings float your boat.
Step 4
To make it a bit grungy we'll add some noise. Go to Filters > Noise > Add Noise. I used an amount of 2%, Distribution: gaussian, Monochromatic. In order to increase that effect I used the Unsharp Mask filter (Filters > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask) with the standard settings.
Step 5
Let's give it more depth. So, go to Filters > Distort > Ripple. I used the standard settings (Amount: 100%, Size: Medium). Again, feel free to go crazy.
Final
Now merge all layers and voila, that's your very own texture made from scratch. If you're still not happy with it try your fun with some other filters, copy and play around with the layer options, add more contrast, rotate it and what not. In a nutshell: go crazy. Chances of you breaking teh Photoshop with something as simple as that are very low.

I simply copied the texture, set the layer to overlay and blurred it again to get this.
